a.k.a Architecture was founded in 2007 by Anne Kelly. Since then, the practice has been involved in a number of residential projects with a scattering of commercial works in between. The practice is committed to providing a personal approach, guiding clients through the design, regulatory and construction stages to ensure a successful project. We are committed to producing designs that are client and site specific.
Anne Kelly (BBSc, BArch(hons), NZRAB, FNZIA) is a Registered Architect with over 25 years of experience in the industry. Early years were spent at Warren + Mahoney in Christchurch, with work on private residences, commercial fitouts and medical facilities. The Kiwi OE beckoned - with a stint of 6 years in London working at 3D Reid. Returning to New Zealand (with a family to boot), saw the beginnings of a.k.a Architecture. For 9 years Anne also spent time teaching 3rd and 4th year Design at Victoria School of Architecture.
Karl Wipatene (BBSc, BArch(hons), NZRAB, NZIA) is a Registered Architect with over 25 years of experience in Architecture. Prior to joining a.k.a, Karl spent 16 years working at Herriot Melhuish O'Neill Architects in Wellington, specialising in residential, workplace interiors and social housing. Over 10 years of his time at HMOA were as an Associate. Previous to this, Karl worked in London on hospitality and commercial projects and in his early working days on house projects at Warren + Mahoney in Christchurch.
Both Karl and Anne have considerable experience in the design and management of building projects; including residential, retail, commercial and hospitality. a.k.a Architecture has a particular interest in buildings that employ a strong sense of materiality, simple but clever composition of form, and a controlled use of light to redefine spaces.
a.k.a Architecture Ltd is an award-winning Wellington based practice.
